Accessibility – Know Before You Go

The following guidance and information has been created in order to help guests with additional needs have a wonderful and memorable experience at The Grand Pier.

Please note within the Arcade there are flashing lights and machines which may affect photosensitive guests.

Essential Companions Guide

The Essential Companion Guide is offered to individuals who require a companion to assist them in accessing the facilities and attractions at The Grand Pier, as well as ensuring their safety, wellbeing and enjoyment.

As the essential companion, you will be given free entry onto The Grand Pier when with your paying individual. If the paying individual wishes to purchase an Unlimited Ride Wristband you will receive one free of charge – these can be claimed from the retail shop on the first floor.

As an Essential Companion, you must be over 14 years old and capable of assisting your paying visitor. Throughout the duration of your visit, the Essential Companion is responsible for understanding the individual’s needs and providing aid as needed.

If you are a Registered Blind Person, please bring a photocopy of your certification. Please keep in mind that ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) or the Blue Badge alone are not accepted as proof of eligibility.

Please fill out the Essential Companion Application form and bring it with you, along with the necessary documents. Kindly note that only one companion is allowed per individual.

Assistance Dogs

Thousands of individuals with accessible needs rely on an assistance dog to help them with day to day activities that many take for granted. Assistance dogs are trained to help people with visual impairments, hearing difficulties, epilepsy, diabetes, physical mobility problems and more. Assistance dogs carry out a variety of practical tasks for people as well as supporting their independence and confidence.

For this reason, we welcome assistance dogs to accompany their owners onto The Grand Pier where pet dogs would not be permitted.

Mobility Scooters

Wheelchairs and other mobility aids are available to hire from Dalesway Mobility Centre located at Carlton Street Car Park nearby. Dalesway Mobility Centre can be reached on 01934 642 002.

We kindly ask that you set your mobility scooter to a low-speed setting whilst you make your way around The Grand Pier.

BALPPA Statement on public safety for disabled people

Members of the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA) welcome visits by disabled people and will do all that is possible to ensure a safe and pleasurable visit. However, certain rides/attractions in our pier can be physically demanding and vigorous. We therefore reserve the right to refuse admission to certain rides/attractions should we feel there is a danger to a particular individual or individuals for whatever reason.

We have been advised by the Health and Safety Executive that refusal on the grounds of health and safety does not constitute discrimination. We hope that you understand and accept the decisions made in the interest of your safety.
