All smiles beside the seaside for children’s cancer charity day

Wednesday 1st May

Around 200 guests, including 125 children, enjoyed a funtastic day beside the seaside courtesy of the Children with Cancer UK charity.

Weston-super-Mare’s iconic Grand Pier played host to the annual day out for families with a child with cancer.

The day out was designed to provide some quality family time and, for one day at least, ease the burden for families affected by childhood cancer.

The Grand Pier provided free rides for the party all day, a free lunch, some special Easter-related activities, and goodie-bags.

The Easter Bunny also put in an appearance, and he wasn’t the only furry friend who wanted to meet the children.

Fido, the Avon Fire & Rescue Service character, also visited the Pier, together with a magician and an ice cream truck.

Most of the families who attended are based in the South West, but some came from as far afield as Essex, Warwickshire and Herefordshire.

The annual trip came about after the Pier’s co-owner, Kerry Michael, found out about the charity and offered to donate a day to the charity once a year.

Tim Moyle, General Manager of the Grand Pier, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the children and their families to the Grand Pier. “We had some lovely weather, which really helped and, judging by the smiles on the faces of the children, they all seemed to have a very enjoyable day.”
Stephanie Revell, Special Events Manager, Children with Cancer UK said: “It was a wonderful day out at the Grand Pier for families affected by cancer. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it affects not just the child but the whole family. This annual event, now in its sixth year, is one of the ways we support families through their difficult treatment journey and during recovery. “We would like to thank the Michael family and the Grand Pier for allowing us to host this event – their continued support is really valued by Children with Cancer UK.”
