Pier proposal goes with a bang

There was magic in the air at Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier last weekend and it wasn’t just because of the spectacular fireworks.

There was romance in the air, too, as Frank Harrison’s plans to propose to his partner on the Pier also went with a bang.

Against the backdrop of exploding rockets and other pyrotechnics, Frank popped the question to 25-year-old Peter Yorke, a cinema team leader, who happily said “Yes!”.

The couple, who live in Swindon, have been together for five years, after meeting at a Halloween party hosted by a mutual friend.

Frank chose the backdrop of the Grand Pier’s latest Fireworks At Sea event because he thought it would be romantic and something they would both fondly remember.

Frank and Pete are big fans of firework displays, and became official as a couple while watching some New Year’s fireworks at a friend’s house in Swindon several years ago.

Weeks of planning went into the proposal, with just Frank and his sister Emma knowing what was going on.

Emma explained: “It was easy to get Pete to visit the Pier with Frank without arousing suspicion because it was my birthday the day, so we just told everyone it was going to be a birthday celebration.”

Emma and Frank’s mum, her partner, and two cousins also attended.

Emma said: “Frank was nervous but excited in the build up to the event, but I am so pleased for them. I wish them both all the happiness in the world.”

She added: “I’d like to say a big thank you to the Grand Pier for helping to make the evening extra special.

When Emma approached the Grand Pier and told them about Frank’s proposal plan, the Pier’s events team was happy to help out and provide a few extra special touches to make the evening even more memorable.

Events co-ordinator Charlotte Gaylard said: “We set aside one of our Coral function rooms with a private balcony and provided some champagne and glasses to help them all celebrate.

“We’re delighted that it all went well and are so pleased to have been able to play a part in Frank’s proposal.

“We hope that everyone who visits the Grand Pier enjoys themselves and makes some memories, and we know that this visit is one that Frank and Pete will never forget.”

Frank said he and Pete had not decided where they will hold their wedding but said they would definitely keep the Grand Pier in mind.

The popular seafront attraction offers a range of wedding packages which can include everything from a wedding breakfast to evening celebrations, as well as the ceremony itself.
